Day 19: Monday 18th May, 2026.
Deer Sound, Mainland Orkney to Stronsay
Duration: 3 hours
A treat of two excursions ashore for my land loving legs today...the first was to explore the shore at Deer Sound ....

...and the old 19th century farm buildings that sit on the old site of a 12th Century drinking hall - the Hall of Tankerness ...

...and then on, and past Tankerness Loch...and its resident cows and waterwheels...

A quick stop at Sheila Fleet's jewelry shop and chapel cafe for an obligatory bun and hot beverage.... before getting back to the jetty just before the dinghy disappeared under the rising tide...

...and then away we went....

away from Orkney mainland for the short true sail to Stronsay with a strengthening wind...

.. and lovely blue skies. In three short hours we came into the narrow channel to Whitehall...

... where we double-secured ourselves to their mooring buoy for the very strong winds to come...

...and went ashore for that second walk to St Catherine's Bay beach...

suitably attired in Scottish sunwear...

... and then sauntered back to the boat..

...for dinner and a spot of hatch battening, and a howly, buffety night.

Hope he bought you some nice Sheila Fleet jewelry 💍, especially with a birthday coming up.
Your journey going well, now for a big one next.
Safe travel.
All well here. Love you both xx
