Day 32: Sunday 31st May, 2026.

Dingja to Kvamsoy

Duration: 8hrs 45min Wildlife seen: 5 porpoises (the first we have seen in Norway) and 2 heron

A very peaceful night and a leisurely breakfast, and then off we motored, having enjoyed our stop at Dingja.

Rain was forecast - which made the wide and dramatic vistas of the Sognefjord very atmospheric...especially with the calm waters...

As we progressed up the fjord, the few little enclaves of houses got even more sparse...

...and the distant peaks got higher and more snow-capped...

There were wonderful waterfalls tumbling down the steep mountainsides...and local fishermen out making their catch..

...The further we went, the greener the water became...mesmerizingly beautiful...

...and after five hours or so, we reached what we thought would be our stop for the night...Bjordal...

... a really picturesque wee bay...

...but as we approached the landing dock we could see the jetty wouldn't be great as the tide had a two metre drop...

...so we decided to motor on another few hours...

...and anchor (for the first time in Norway), at a magical wee island called Kvamsoy...

...which lies just off the coast of the village of Kvamme...

The island is considered the smallest island to have its own church in the world...so we rowed ashore to take a peek..

The church was built around 1300, and is still really well maintained..

...and there is a little path that takes you round the island to 'Olavskjelda' - St Olav's spring...believed to have healing properties and a place of Christian pilgrimage as, according to legend, it is said King Olav Haraldsson visited Kvamsoy island during his Christianization of Norway..

...and then on to a high stoney outcrop with views of where King Sverre may have lain in wait with his fleet, before meeting King Magnus Erlingson in the Battle of Fimriete in 1184..

And feeling our legs were suitable stretched, we went back to the boat...

...and jumped aboard just as the rain came in...

...for another restful night....

That rain, mist and still air looks like home to midges. Are they with you? I am greatly enjoying travelling along with you from a comfy reclining fixed seat. Thanks a lot
