Kabelvag and Skrei Museum...

Day 61: Friday 10th July, 2026

Kabelvag

Awoke after a very rainy night to a very rainy day - so our plan of exploring the close environs of Kabelvag seemed a good one... first stop was Hjornet Cafe for a lovely lunch, and then once the heavy rain had eased a bit we walked down to nearby Storvagen - where the commercial trade of cod fishing began...

...to visit the newly opened Skrei museum which is housed in the 'Otolith' building whose architecture is inspired by the cod's ear stone, which records its growth and migration patterns like the annual rings of a tree...

It was a really impressive exhibition, as well as a beautifully crafted space, which told the story through a sound, light and interactive media exhibition of the history and lives of the Arctic Cod -Skrei - and the coastal peoples of Lofoten. It has been built alongside a preserved 1815 Manor House with its authentic boat sheds and fishermen's cabins...

Alongside, there is also an Aquarium where we learnt that Norway's coastline is the second largest in the world and could span the equator two and a half times, and all about cold water coral - which we had noticed on the beach at Tengelfjorden...

...and finally a large Gallery space housing an exhibition of Kaare Espolin Johnson's dark and rather spooky depictions of fishermen and coastal folk.

...As the rain lashed down again, we retreated back to the boat and planned the next few legs in the coming days ...hoping for drier days ahead.
