Day 18: Sunday 17th May, 2026

Wick to Deer Sound , eastern side 'Mainland' Orkney

Duration: 6 hours 50mins : Wildlife seen - dolphin, arctic terns, gullimots, puffins, fulmar, shags

The beguiling skies of last night had dissipated, and turned into grey rainy ones, so with waterproofs donned we headed up to the supermarket to stock up on foodstuffs since we would be anchoring for the next wee while....bustling past the old fog cannon and back aboard just before the heavens really opened...

A quick lunch devoured, and then we headed away from Mainland Scotland.....sails up and motor on...

...leaving the dark skies behind...

...to run with blue skies and dolphins ...

...towards Orkney and its Isles. Looking back at mainland Scotland it always amazes me how much closer land masses are in reality than one thinks when looking at a map - here when you see mainland Scotland end and the Orkney Islands begin, but also when you round the Mull of Kintyre and look over to Ireland...

With the Captain's careful planning, the tides and its countercurrents on the Sandy Riddle Sandbank made it feel like we were surfing effortlessly to our destination...

...and after a brief encounter with choppier waters off Copinsay Sound we headed into Deer Sound at Tankerhall, eastern mainland Orkney to anchor for a lovely calm night.
