Day 1: Thursday 30th April 2026

Inverkip to Lochranza, Arran

Duration 4 hours

Wildlife seen - 2 porpoises, heron

A leisurely departure for Sulaire, in the Midday sun, after fueling up and filling up the watertanks.

The Navy saw fit to make sure the waters were safe with lots of activity, as a huge Air Craft Carrier guarded the Clyde....

A low flypast by a Hercules overhead, ...

....and then a relaxed sail to Lochranza, where we discovered the Captains 'Thruster' was not performing as it should!! Not an 'age thing' I was told, and further investigations needed...but nonetheless the 'competent' crew remembered how to hook a visitor buoy, and we tied up safely.

Went ashore for the familiar 'Fairy Dell' walk along the shore where we heard our first Cuckoo, and spotted lots of wild primroses, bluebells and wild garlic,

There has been a new commemorative stone erected at Newton Point for James Hutton 'the Father of Modern Geology' who, in 1787, found his first example of 350 million-year-old Carboniferous Sandstone sitting atop vertically tilted 540 -million-year- old Dalradian schist stone, that proved his theory of 'Unconformity', "deep time" and the immense age of the Earth.

With time to consider our short transient Human lifetimes we returned to the boat....

...where we enjoyed a bbq dinner watching the most magnificent sunset ....

and huge, bright full moon display their equally magical lightshows.

So excited to be following your seafaring adventures! Got mine own tomorrow on the Calmac ferry back to Oban from Barra! Not quite in the same league! Hugs and excited for you!

Oooh Barra, one of our favourite islands (I was sipping some of their very fine whisky last night). Hope Calmac delivered you safely, and on time, ashore. Sorry to miss you both at the Woodhutlee bash xx
